We're currently planning a range of practical projects to explore the religious heritage of the North-East of England.
Our fieldwork excavation programme will tackle a total of six sites over the two years that the project will run. We will look at a diverse selection of sites ranging from prehistoric monuments to medieval monastic granges. These excavations will provide the volunteer participants with a chance to get involved in all aspects of fieldwork, including post-excavation work and field survey.
We will also carry out a series of survey projects. These will involve carrying out wide-ranging regional surveys of a range of sites related to religion and ritual. Planned topics include looking at prehistoric rock art, making records of known medieval wayside crosses, and capturing examples of graffiti in medieval parish churches.
Finally, there will also be free-standing training opportunities, which will provide volunteers with a chance to learn about a wide-range of archaeological research skills. We will particularly focus on the acquisition of digital skills, such as the use of Lidar, Geographical Information Systems and photogrammetry.
